This is certainly--and still--the best entry-level text on Psychoanalysis. After more than thirty years, there is no more cogent or approachable volume for the student (college, graduate, or beyond) who is exploring Freud and his "science" for the first time. Having edited Dr. William Meissner's masterful "Freud and Psychoanalysis," which CHOICE evaluated as now the "go-to" text on the subject, I would concur, with the qualification that Dr Meissner's work is written by a world-renowned analyst and thus authoritative and professional beyond compare and consequently the appropriate choice for the medical student or psychiatric resident. Nevertheless for most readers it would be a superb second--and more professional--discussion after the initiation Fancher, an experienced teacher, has provided. Together, the two volumes are a must for the seriously interested.
